THICK WEB SWITCHES

Thick web switches are an ideal solution for heavy haul/ passenger traffic line as well as High Speed lines, most commonly refer to a new design of sturdier switches on pre-stressed concrete sleepers.Increased speed limits on the Indian rails have lead to use of heavier 60 Kg and 52 Kg rails section with thick web. The conventional point machine with the throw of 143mm proves inept for the operation of these thick web switches so IRS point machine throw of 220 mm has been developed. The present hand book covers the IRS point machine for operation on thick web switch(TWS) along with clamp point lock arrangement.These switches are made from specific asymmetrical tongue rail sections, forged at the end to match standard rail sections. The transition from one section to the other lies mostly in the clamped area at the end of the switch. Thus welding becomes superfluous in the flexible area.

H BEAM SLEEPER

The H-beam sleeper is made of single rolled H-beam section having adequate bearing area, robust structure and accurate dimensions which are more suitable for the tracks running over Steel bridges. H-beam sleepers are exclusively designed to handle the dynamic loads of trains on non-ballasted open deck steel girder bridges. The H-beam sleeper is made of single rolled H-beam section having adequate bearing area, robust structure and accurate dimensions which are more suitable for the tracks running over bridges. Canted bearing plates are riveted on the H-beam sleeper to hold the running rails using rail elastic fastening system. It is possible to have either zero load or full load fastening system on H-Beam Sleepers as per client requirement. Use of Zero load fastening system (ZRF) on H-beam sleepers ensures that rail creep or thermal expansion forces are not transmitted to the girders. In ZRF system elastic fastenings are used and no extra maintenance tools are involved. It is also possible to replace the rail-free liner by toe-loadable liner wherever required. H-beam sleepers facilitate provision of long welded tracks on bridges.

STEEL CHANNEL SLEEPER

The steel channel sleeper designed by ROSO for BG and MG are fabricated from IS: 2062. The sleeper consists of two mild steel channels ISMC 150 or ISMC 175 connected by T-Shaped diaphragms. Rivets are used for the connection of channel and canted bearing plates. The channels are stiffened by mild steel plates. The sleepers are kept over elastomeric pads and connected to the bridge girder by hook bolts. The rails are kept on grooved rubber pads and are connected to the sleepers by 'T' headed bolts and nuts with mild steel inner and outer clips and spring washers etc. Steel channel sleepers are designed for use in the railway tracks running over bridges where a resilient ballast bed cannot be used. Steel channel sleepers are fabricated from steel channel sections, wherein two channels are welded together to obtain the required strength. Both running and guard rails are accommodated on the channel sleeper. The running rails are fixed to the canted bearing plate using clip and bolt rail fastening system. However the guard rails are bolted directly on the sleepers. Rubber pads are also provided under each rail and sleeper to absorb the shocks and dampen the vibrations. Steel channel sleeper with all steel fittings are hot dip galvanized to enhance the service life of the product.

IMPROVED SWITCH EXPANSION JOINT – SINGLE GAP

This SEJ is also known as Rahee Design (RTT) SEJ in field. The non-gauge side of running rails on each side is machined to a reduced head width. These two non-bent running rails are mounted with a gap in between along with the third rail called a gap avoiding rail of predetermined length. This gap avoiding rail is securely fitted to one of the running rails with high tensile steel bolts. This running rail along with the gap avoiding rail fastened to it, together form the stock rail. The other running rail is called the tongue rail. The non-bolted part of the gap avoiding rail supports the machined segment of the tongue rail. The whole arrangement rests on 5 wide sleepers 300 mm wide. It provides bend free arrangement without any thermal changes or stress concentrations. To ensure adequate contact surface and bearing, the width of the rail head is increased to 90mm over the transfer length where gap avoiding rail supports machined rails. The wheel does not jump the gap. The adequate bearing surface ensures smooth guidance over the gap. There is no risk of rail fracture or cracks as there are no bends. As there can be hunting oscillations or side to side movement of the wheel, there is a possibility that root radius can graze the rail ends. This is eliminated by the use of a check rail and it also ensures smooth entry on the SEJ.

IMPROVED SWITCH EXPANSION JOINT – DOUBLE GAP

This SEJ is also known as Bina Metal Design (BMW) SEJ in field. Two gaps are given where each gap provided on the SEJ can cater for the LWR on its side. The tongue rail is manufactured by cutting the rail vertically through the head and foot location. Then, the two cut rails are joined together to make one stock rail. The stock rail is joined using bolts at the web. This stock rail is now considered to be static with negligible expansion and contraction in length due to temperature. The LWR of each side expands and contracts at the gap while this stock rail remains static. This SEJ makes use of 6 wider concrete sleepers in total, 3 sleepers at each gap. MS angle tie bracket is used to maintain the sleeper spacing on these wide sleepers.

SPRING SETTING DEVICE (SSD)

It is used for reduction in jerks. It is used for maintenance of adequate minimum opening of open tongue rail for wheel passage. The point machine/alternate drive arrangement moves the tongue rail at toe during process of setting change. This is used for closing spring till its movement. Increases service life of tongue rail also ensures no reverse bend in tongue rail, works as a second drive for switches.
